Welcome! That's awesome that you've got your Granddad's old stuff.

+1 on getting the razor properly honed! Might be the perfect time to do this while you are waiting for a shipment of new soap/cream/strop.

[quote=Spatterdash;360346I gotta ask, though... am I the only one that read the title of this thread and thought "'Girlfriend's Old Blade'? This should be an amusing thread!"[/quote]

EXACTLY! reading the first couple answers i thought i was crazy. how cool would it be if you started dating a girl and she gives you an extra straight razor she doesn't use anymore? my G/F would never touch a SR.

BTW, welcome and congrats on the family heirloom, i would get it honed by a pro to start. but i would also buy another from the Classifieds so that your never without a SR. i may be addicted though

Default Shave #2 Wiyh GRANDFATHERS old blade

I'm feeling more comfortable with my techneque the second time around but it is like scaping a playing card across my face. Does anybody have or use a pro honer they recommend? How much can I expect to spend and how often will I need this done?

Have a look in the classifieds. There are a number of members here who both offer honing services and have very good reputations. Once your blade's up to speed you can almost certainly keep it there yourself with a decent barber's hone or other finishing hone, eg a coticule.

Noticed you used the word 'scraping' in your first post also.
You're not literally scraping the razor across your face are you ??? It should be just about flat on your face.

The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

I find this is a hard thing for me to do at times, especially ATG. It's psychological as I have to get over the image that laying it flat will peel my skin like a knife piece of fruit. I figure time will work this out, as I learn more about the ability of the blade with each shave.

This was an improper metaphor, sorry. The blade is basically flat on my face as I use it. Last night I used actual saving soap I bought at a local drug store and that made a huge difference over the airisol can. I used the word scrap to discribe a lack of a proper hone on the edge. When I look at the edge in a bright light it shows no shinny spots at all. Its just not quite right yet.
