Thread: Newbie checking in

I just ordered my first straight (a restored Germania Cutlery model) and it's on its way as we speak. I'm still in the market for a strop (Tony Miller's practice strop looks like a winner but his site is currently closed). I've been a DE shaver for several months now so I already own all of the other required equipment. I just thought I would check in on this forum and say hello. I want to try straight-razor shaving because I'm a traditional kind of guy and I want to try to recapture a bit of the past tradition. Plus, the word on the street is that I can get a closer shave with straight shaving than any other way, which I'm always interested in. If anyone has any tips or advice, send them my way. I'm looking forward to my first straight shave and becoming a more active member of this forum.

If you have never stropped, get a cheap strop until you are sure you won't cut it up. First time I stropped, I put a couple nicks on it. It's still usable but I would have hate to do it to an expensive one.

Welcome to SRP. I'm pretty new as well-- been on the site for a couple of months, and have been shaving with a straight for a whopping 1 week. The advice here is great, be sure to check out the SRP Wiki section and read up on that. There is also a good document located at:

I've managed to make the last 3 shaves without cutting myself, with the last one a full with the grain, across the grain, and against the grain passes, and it *is* the closest shave I've ever had. I am now researching the dark art of honing, and have some wetstones on order. Another site member was even so kind as to donate to me a Double Arrow razor at no charge to practice honing-- how cool is that!

Welcome to SRP. Having some experience in DE shaving will make the transition easier. There are tutorial videos here and a good post by SRP founder Lynn Abrams to ease into the straight razor shave here. That is the way I did it and it worked very well for me.

Hey guys,
Looking for a newbie strop. I was going to order a strop from the straight razor design website but i don't want to mess up a really good one. I looked into the classified adds in the SRP website but really haven't found one. Is there anybody out there that has any used or old strops to sell to a newb. It would be much appreciated.
