Thanked: 0Looking to Turn One into a Shaver
Hi Everyone,
I am a total newb, but I would still like to restore an old razor instead of buying a new one. I want to send one away to get honed and I have purchased a strop. I am not to interested in esthetics (at least not yet) as I want to see if I like straight shaving before spending serious money. I have a thick beard and sensitive skin. Which one should I learn with?
I purchased these four razors. The two on the left side are Bokers. One is a hollow one is a flat. both are 5/8".
The bottom right one is a 7\8" Wade and Butcher. The cutler is Joseph Rodgerson and Sons, which, from my research is a good thing. The upper right blade is a 5\8" hollow. It's from Soligen and it says Edwards and Sons.

Welcome to the forum.
All are great "names" - you did well. Pick one, get it honed, and start the best shaving adventure you'll ever have .... after you get a few shaves under your belt you'll get an itch to have them all honed.
Cheers,
Rick

Nice razors. Personally I would start with your 7/8 W&B if you have a thick beard and sensitive skin. But that's just my advise so take it for what it's worth.

Welcome to SRP! If the scales are good and none of the blades have visual cracks or large chips at the edge I would send at least the W&B and the Boker hollow. Wouldn't hurt to have a pair and if one style of grind doesn't suit you at this stage of the game the other might.
Here is the SRP Wiki with many tutorials relating to all things regarding the SR shave.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Definitely the hollow Boker. It's a regular sized razor in what is normal grind. The wedges are uncomon for various reasons, but regardless of those reasons I think best way to start is just a high quality regular razor, which the Boker is.
The w&b/rodgers is one or the other, perhaps you're confusing the case - look at the shank of the razor, not at the box. Large size and heavy grind for me is not a good combination for learning, even if you end up prefering those in the long run.
