Just Not Right Now
After about 3 months of using a great SR i have come to a sad, but real, conclusion.
You see, I have very young kids and it seemed that no matter how early I got up to shave (as early as 4:30am) and no matter how late I stayed up (to about 11:30pm) someone was always knocking on the door for something.
The first time I flinched and well, that divit has caused a long-lasting reminder on my cheek. The second time my wife knocked ever so politely and quietly, but my concentration was so deep that the flentching became as deep at my thought.
So, in an effort to stay old-school and continue to enjoying shaving I got a DE. While it's a great shave, its still nowhere near as smooth as my Wapi is. However, the kids could drawing with Sharpy markers on my legs and this thing has yet to draw blood.
I'm keeping the straights for those times that no one is home (maybe 1-2 times a year) or when they grow up and move away in a few decades.
This fourms has been and continues to be great! And I'm sticking with the community. Thanks for all the help guys.

Bummer, I guess the one upside of living on an aircraft carrier at sea for a few deployments is I can be doing something and nothing will cause me to flinch short of a whack to the head. Luckily I live alone now so just have to close the door to keep the cat out since it tends to jump up to see what I'm doing. Would hate to take off an ear on accident, lol.

I can totally understand and I think you're being very smart about it.
Str8 shaving should be a zen thing and done in total harmony with yourself only.
Even after 25+ years of str8 shaving I need to have my total peace and quiet around me to enjoy my shave. It's not so much the concentration but those 20+ minutes make me forget about any problems or sorrows I may have. It truly encloses me in a cocoon with only happy feelings.
It's a healthy mental work-out.
I truly hope you do find the time to enjoy a str8 shave once in a while.

I'll tell ya, my wife knows that when it is time for me to shave she clears the bathroom, I don't want any interruptions. she'll shuffle the kids out to the other room and keep them from disturbing me. Just saying, rather than give up something you enjoy, force the factors around you into conforming with your need. I'm sure you make enoughs sacrifices like all dads that it is a small thing to ask.

I have to agree with Red on that. Every person needs some alone time. But in the end it is your decision and there is nothing wrong with shaving with a DE. I've got a nice Merkur sitting next to the Dovo and it shaves like a charm.

Thanked: 235You don't need to give up something you love. You just need to buy a big paddle strop and an egg timer. When it is time for you to shave just set the timer for 20 minutes. If the children anoy you in that 20 minutes give them a whack on the but with the paddle strop. In a few days you will have 20 minutes of you time every day.

I've got a 3 year old that I dont want anywhere near my razor...
My GF yells at me when they are on there way to brush his teeth and I'll tell her if its safe (or tell her its not and then they will just wait a bit..)
If I shave in the morning I'll take my son for a shower.. my GF will take him out of the shower to get him drie and dressed and while they are busy I can shave without an interuption. If I shave in the evening my GF might brush his teath as I'm shaving but I keep an eye on them so I wont be startled. I dont leave my razor within reach of my son and everyting is fine..
Maybe a lock on the door could help you out.
