Thread: Stropping on a narrow strop

Cool, Scott!

I started with the X-pattern, heal to toe, and
then eventually just started stropping straight
and moving the razor as I go. I'm hoping that
my new 3" strop will be as good as my 2"

So how do you guys hold the strop? Say you mount it to a wall, bracket, whatever, and pull it perpendicular to the wall. Are you facing the wall or are you facing parallel with the wall?

It seems like with an arcing technique it would be easier to face parallel with the wall and use a stropping motion kind of like dealing cards, whereas with a push pull technique it would be more natural to face the wall.

Am I making any sense?

I'm just conceptualizing here, as I have yet to receive my strop and SR

It's an X pattern, but with an arc.

Just something you might want to give a try. Oh, and you'd start the stroke with the point (toe) where the red line begins (the razor perpendicular to the strop or slightly angled opposite from the final position shown) then follow through, as diagrammed, with that arcing, or sweeping stroke as shown. Kind of like a wind shield wiper.

And, the razor doesn't fall off of the strop. You'd do your flip at about the spot where the diagram shows the razor resting at the end of the stroke, and then start the second stroke at the beginning of the other red line.

Hope that's not confusing.

This is actually very cool. I have a really big loom strop that I use a lot and find myself almost doing figure 8's with it which is very similar to this.

Yes, actually when you really get your rhythm going with this method, a figure eight type pattern comes naturally.
