    Default a couple newbie questions

Hi guys. I just joined SRP a few days ago and have been trying to educate myself as much as possible before I buy my first straight razor set up. First, can anyone tell me what is meant by the term "jimps" ? And also, are there any recommendations on a decent strop and hone for a beginner to learn on?
Any comments are appreciated. I am so glad I found this site and can't wait to get my first straight razor. SRP has opened up a whole new world that I never new existed!

Jimps are decorative file marks, scallops, etc on the spine of the blade and the shank....ornamental in nature.

    Jimps !!!!

Normally refer to the tang area either top or bottom notches, cut into the tang to facilitate grip....

There is really no such thing as a beginner's hone, although some of us recommend to begin learning to hone by re-freshing a shave ready edge using a barber's hone....

This gives you a good introduction to the honing stroke without having to learn how to set a bevel which can come later with waterstones...

There are quite a few lower priced quality strops out there to learn on check the Vendors corner

This is an odd question and it's a little like asking us what colour you prefer. Glen's suggestion is a good one for some, but I couldn't achieve a good edge from my barber hones for years! A chromium oxide pasted paddle strop might be a more natural first step. Get both and see which you prefer.

'First' because you need a back up, right?
