Thanked: 259glad there are others out there
hi everyone,
i was starting to wonder if i was the only one out here that wanted to return to the things of the past, like shaving with a straight razor and just returning to a more simple way of life.
i wish i had found this site first before i bought the first couple of razors and tried to hone and then shave(very badly i might say) and thinking maybe i should just give up. but as luck would have it i came across lynn abrams videos on youtube and that is the one most important thing to keep me with the idea that i too may be able to accomplish this without cutting my face to shreds.
i purchased a good quaility used razor made in solingen and have having much better luck.
i have a 1000/6000 grit water stone for now and hopefully will get a better hone later.
i am sure i will have many questions later on. just glad you guys are around and willing to help others along on this subject....scott

Welcome to the forum. You will find lots of help in learning how to get the best out of a cutthroat razor on this site. I'm not sure you will be returning to the simple life. I managed 40+ years with one razor, brush and soap, whatever was sold at the supermarket.
Like many others, since discovering the site I now have several razors, bowls, expensive soaps and post shave treatments. not to mention strops and all the other paraphernalia. I used to shower & shave in 10 minutes, I now take as long in the bathroom as my wife.'Living the dream, one nightmare at a time'

Welcome, I too am thankful there are others out there who enjoy doing things the old-fashioned way. There's a simple pleasure in maintaining and using your own razors; a real sense of ownership and accountability that brings pride.
You've come to the right place for information and I'm sure you'll learn plenty!

Thanked: 346Not everyone here is necessarily into the simpler/old-fashioned mindset. Some of us are here because we found our great-grandfather's razor and wanted to know how to restore it, some of us simply can't get a decent shave any other way, some of us are trying to move to a greener lifestyle, and some of us just enjoy talking about this stuff...
But we all enjoy different aspects of straight razors, in our own way.
So welcome to SRP

When you want to return to the simple old fashioned life you have to take the good with the bad and as I've said before if we all returned to those thrilling days of yesteryear most of us wouldn't be alive because of medical conditions back then.
Of course there's nothing wrong with living in the present and adapting what we want from different times and places.
