    Default Straight Shaving and Aftershave

    Just a quick question everyone,

Is it true that you should not use alcohol based aftershave after using a straight razor? I have heard this from various sources and am unsure whether or not this is entirely valid. After traditional wetshaving (i.e Merkur 34c w/ a derby) the AS feels just fine. As a straight is more aggressive (at least at this point it is, being new and all), is an alcohol based aftershave counterproductive?

Not true at all. I use alcohol based AS after every shave.

no, this is not true. you should not get razor burn, if you do it has to do with either your razor being too dull, your technique being too poor, or both.
if alcohol aftershave works for you now, it should work after proper straight razor shave as well.

I use an alcohol based after shave after every str8 shave. Some people with dry skin can't use alcohol based AS, but it has nothing to do with a str8. If you use alcohol based AS with a DE, you'll be fine with a str8.

When you first start shaving with a str8, your face is a little tender as it gets used to the blade (and as you adjust your technique to no pressure and low angle). You might want to use an AS balm until the tenderness goes away.

I'm fair skinned, blue eyed. I've never got on with aftershave, most types seem to burn me to some degree. Same goes for some soaps. For years I just used cold water. Nowadays Trumper's Skin Food or Nivea balm for sensitive skin.
I've often wondered if there is any correlation between those who tan easily in the sun rather than burn and the reaction to aftershave.
Talking to my optician, those lucky people who tan easily adapt to contact lenses more quickly.

If alcohol AS Splashes are wrong I dont want to be right...

ASS - AD...that's After Shave Splash Acquisition Disorder...for those with wandering minds

I love the burn...so much in fact that i use AS every day even when i dont shave... ilove how tight it leaves my skin feel and the scents are great for waking me up in the am...and they dont stick too long...
