Wade & Butcher Dating
Hi Folks, thinking of purchasing a W&B "chopper" with the barbers notch. Can someone share the date range for one of these razors. It's the one "intended for barber use". How old are these razors? Thanks

My guess would be circa 1850 .

Usual way of dating is, if the tang is stamped 'Sheffield England' it's post 1890
'Sheffield' minus the 'England' is pre 1890The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Lummus "Old Sheffield Razors" Antiques Magazine December 1922 -p267:
W. Date 1845 Maker: William and Samuel Butcher, Supra. Inscription "Wade & Butcher, For Barbers Use". Handle, black horn.
The photo shows a large chopper wedge with the barber notch.

I appreciate the input. Pictures are attached. You can't read the etching from the photo, but it reads:
THE ORIGINAL AND ONLY GENUINE BOW RAZOR
MANUFACTURED SOLELY BY
WADE & BUTCHER
There is a stamp of a bow on the tang, and the blade appears to be a 7/8.

Probably a bit later - looks hollow ground to me.
