Thumbs up Just a note of thanks!

    Hey Gentlemen (and Ladies),

I just wanted to drop you all a note of thanks to start things off here! There are so many excellent resources in and linked to this forum that make a newbie like myself feel very comfortable with the idea of straight razor shaving.

I'd like to introduce myself, seeing as I'll probably be spending quite a bit of time here troubleshooting my future shaving!

My name is Mark, I'm 24 years old, and I'm from San Diego. I'll be graduating from SDSU here in a couple weeks with my Bachelor's degree in History. I will be applying for Master's programs this fall to continue my education in History.

Well great. That's what I'm doing, but who am I and why am I here?

I'm here because I have a great appreciation for craftsmanship, quality tools, and expanding one's skill set.

I have a confession. I have TAD. I'm sure many of you have it as well, but a different strain (a subset really) of the disorder. I love tools. Quality tools. In fact, a good portion of my (ridiculously small) discretionary income ends up fueling this disorder.

There's something great about having the right tool for the job, and there's something even better about using a quality tool to do that job. Simple pleasure?

So there's a learning curve to straight shaving. And? Doesn't anything satisfying have a somewhat steep learning curve?

    So.....

My plan? The classifieds! After some initial searching, I thought that I was going to have to save at least $150 to get something worth shaving with. You know, a quality tool! Thanks to razorfiends like you, I'm probably going to be able to get something of good quality and shave ready for less than $50!

Of course, the proper acoutrements will end up being a bit more, but I'm patient. Saving my pennies one by one, until I'm ready to POUNCE on unsuspecting classified ads!

Thanks for being a part of a place where someone with the desire can come and get a great deal of information!

Watch out other classified lurkers, I'll be watching! (And leaping from hiding to attack as soon as I make some money!)

    Thanks for reading,

    Mark

Welcome to SRP. I am a TADer too..... along with a bunch of other ADs. Sounds like you're in the right place.

good to see someone with a plan. I just jumped in before finding this site and made some initial bad buys. could have gotten started really good if i had found this site first.

    Thumbs up It has begun.

    It has begun.

I have purchased a NOS, SFK stamped Wapi from TstebinsB! $35. Is it just me, or is that a pretty good deal? I've now seen the same razor listed for ~$50, and assorted wapis for around that. Looks like an SRP'er passing the deals on.

    It's supposed to ship tomorrow!

    Excitement overflows!

Then it's off to a honemeister for some abrasive magic, then finally back to me for a first shave!

I'll be sure to let you guys know how it goes. I'm also sure I'll need some help with the questions that develop from that experience.

Considering there are guys offering free honing to newbies, it's a pretty good deal yes.

Have you already got everything else?

Good luck! I hope it arrives quickly.

Next paycheck, I'll be ordering a beginner's strop from Tony Miller (with a practice strop !).

While the process of getting her honed is going on, I'll be looking locally for a place to procure some soap (Tabac or MWF), a brush, and a styptic pencil.

I plan to order a soap sampler from one of the vendors here soon after.

I'm looking to learn to shave first, and find me some fancy soaps/oils/aftershaves etc. later on.

I don't have much disposable income, so it may take me a bit. That's ok though, I know how to be patient (but it's still so hard).

I'll be graduating from SDSU this Friday(so excited!) without any debt aside from some student loans (tuition). Credit cards in undisciplined (or impatient) hands can be dangerous, but I've stayed away from use except in dire circumstances.

So, patience? I can do patience. It just helps build anticipation right?

    ..................................right?

Why am I on here? I need to get back to writing a paper!

    'Til my next update,

    -Mark
