One more question - with the leather, there is a finished side and a rougher side. Do you ever use the rough side?
I've wondered the same thing. I've just received a Miller strop set-up with a apprentice strop, which doesn't have a cotton/linen side, and I would hate to slice up the linen. So...couldn't the rough side be used instead, at least until it smooths out? I can see it's not as rough as the linen I have.

Linen first and the smooth side of the leather second is the traditional method. As in most things you can experiment and see how different options work for you and post your results.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
