I've realized this happens when I do spine leading strokes on the hone, as in using the hone as strop, before I strop. Any reason why I shouldn't be doing that?

Back honing is limited to removing a wire edge caused by overhoning or in the extreme case where I would breadknife a razor to remove a serious chip I would follow with some spine leading strokes but other than that I see no use in it. Just IMHO.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

It can happen on glazed high grit hones when there is too much friction by too little water. I'd call it screaming, LOL

Hello, I just bought this razor from bassguy. He didn't tell me it was a screamer!
Actually, I'm pretty green with a straight, having trouble with pulling instead of cutting hairs. This razor, however, is phenomenal. I didn't know it could be so sublime! What an edge. And bassguy was superb to deal with, and sold the razor for a great price, I thought.
    Thanks, bassguy, and SRP, too.

Thanks to Max for that edge.
