Thanked: 4I just ordered my Strop and Razor from SRD. I can say nothing but good things about the product and service. Of course, if you're like me, you'll upgrade a couple of things here and there and end up spending more than that awesome price. Honestly, if you can get completely set up for that price, it's worth it, to me. I have not used SRD soaps (yet, but I feel SSAD coming on...) but I'm about a minute or two from ordering some. I bought (and spent more than the 40 dollars you're asking about) a badger brush from elsewhere and have also used a cheap boar brush. Well, you'll need a brush and soap right?
Overall, you could probably get the necessary stuff a little cheaper here and there, but this stuff you're looking at is good quality equipment at a good (no, great!) price. Compare it anywhere (keeping in mind that not all razors are as shave ready as this one will be) and I doubt you'll find stuff at this level of quality for this price.
If you've got the money to spend, from one newb to another, as Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins would say, "THIS IS IT!"

Thanked: 1903Welcome to SRP, hongili.
As a general rule, we do not discuss prices of shaving related articles. Let it suffice to say that the products you chose are good, and the vendor is a reputable source. I would, however, strongly encourage you to also order the DVD. You will not regret it.
Best regards,
Robin

The only other thing that I would add to what's been said is that you may find it easier to learn to strop on a strop wider than 2." It is the old european standard, but will require you to strop in -strokes. While that is not so tough, it may be another variable to consider when learning. I would not skimp on the strop since while you will likely be looking for other razors, soaps and even brushes, if you get into it, one good strop is all you will need.

Thanked: 0Thanks guys.
Yeah, I've got a lot to learn. Sorry for the pricing question faux pas.

Thanked: 4FWIW, I upgraded to the Premium I 3" strop and I LOVE it. The quality and the look. I have not been disappointed, and I doubt you would either.

Thanked: 2newblie
with my limitted newblie experience I will offer this:
If you don't know how to strop you will likely make a mess of your first one. With that in mind I would suggest using the upgrade offered with that purchase to get a great strop at an excellent value but also to get a starter strop elsewhere to use until you get the hang of it. I know mine is all hacked up at the edges where I flipped the blade while still moving it.
Those are all quality products that come in the kit so their wouldn't be much upgrading in the future unless you want to get fancy. cheaping out on the brush means getting a synthetic one that most likely looses the hairs into your soap or onto your face. I went that route and find myself looking to upgrade. As for the mug, I don't believe it really makes a differnce in quality from mug to mug so if it makes a difference on the price point you can grab the "World's Greatest Dad" mug out of the cupboard. Mine is yellow and says "Thanks For Volunteering"

Thanked: 4Well, SRD sells replacement leather for 20 dollars, so basically that's as cheap or cheaper than any starter strop, so the wisdom was passed down to me. If I ever mess it up, cheap replacement for high quality stuff. Plus, it's wide enough to stay in the middle, away from the edges where I suspect nicks would happen.
Good luck either way.

I have a 3" SRD strop and 3 Dovo razors. They are excellent and I highly recommend them. As has been said, SRD offers a replacement leather for the strop, should the need arise. I haven't tried the SRD soap yet and don't have experience with the Simpson brush, but I am confident that they are very serviceable since SRD sells them.
