VDH is a soapy scent to me, no one not in particular. There are several vendors on here that sell samples of their products. The Gentleman's Quarter and Mama Bears both are very reputable glycerin soap producers as well as many others that can be found in the Vendor's Forum of SRP.

Hope this helps a bit. Also, welcome aboard.

    Joe

i ordered several mamabear soaps, and i only liked 1 of the scents, "sleigh ride" it smells like cinnamon, like the old big red chewing gum
i think tgq and mamabear both sale sample packs or individual samples, i think mamabear will send "soap slivers" for like a buck a piece

If Mike says it, I'd believe it. Trust me, he knows his soap.

Knows in the biblical sense of the word, if you get my drift.

Before figuring out what scent you like best, try some of the soaps available to find out which ones perform best for you. I like the scents from Classic Shaving but they perform pretty badly. Of the ones I've tried the ones from TGQ are the best for me. It also happens her scents are at the top also. Mama Bear and SRD have followings too. Generally, you can't go wrong with any of these. Scent becomes a personal thing. Try a selection from these sources and see what you think...

The problem with scents is that they are very personal and different people like different things. This is so obvious that people often put scent before shaving performance. One good example of this is Tabac, an excellent soap in terms of performance but with a scent that turns many people off. Probably, a good way to try out soaps before you commit is to get a sampler. Several stores give you this option. This one offers both soap and cream samples:

The Shave Den Store (Powered by CubeCart)

I would suggest to consider shaving performance before scent in your decision and avoid samplers that come exclusively from one manufacturer. You may want to try creams, milled and glycerin soaps before you make your decision, you do not have to stick with just one. Each class has its pros and cons. This thread contains some of the differences:

    http://straightrazorpalace.com/shavi...-opinions.html

You may also want to visit the review section and chose products with good reviews. BeBerlin has several good soap reviews there. A member here, loueedacat, has reviewed a number of them in the soap section as well.

There is a good thread to get an idea of where to start:
