Getting worse
I seem to be getting worse instead of better even after months of straight razor shaving.I think I've damaged the edge of my razor.I found little rust spots on the blade some very near the blade edge and foolishly rubbed it along its edge with sand paper.I have since tried to restore the edge and have thought I was getting somewhere but my shaves are getting worse.I think I need to send it away to be restored.

It would be a good idea to send it out if you're not well versed at honing your own. In the future do 20 laps on the leather strop following the shave and then use a rust preventative and you will avoid the corrosion problem.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 127Charlie,
You are probably correct about your blade. Get it hoaned by someone who knows what they are doing. The next thing you need to do is forget everything you learned and start all over again, but this time s l o w up a bit. Start by just shaving from your sideburn down to your chin and stop. Finish the shave with your old safety razor. When you are consistantly shaving that area and smiling about it blow up that cheek and shave one stroke next to it. Don't go any further with the str8 until you are satisfied with that and then move on to the next 'small' area. You can do this, just don't get in a hurry. Good luck!

Thanked: 234It always helps to have a second razor!
To be honest, it sounds like you're being seriously hindered by your razor. Can I ask what it is?

Hi,
My razor's a Flic. The thing is, all was going swimmingly until the rust spots.I felt I was improving.I stopped worrying about getting BBS shaves and just finished off sometimes with my DE.I feel that if it wasn't for the rust spot thing I would have been ok.

Thanked: 127Charlie,
Get that razor to a honemeister and have him polish out the rust and fix any damage. Then follow the advice Jimmy gave and oil that blade after every use. Sounds like you have one of those razors that are prone to rusting.
