    Default Shaving mugs

I got a cool "Ye Olde Shaving Mug" mug off ebay; it even has the swirly inundations on the bottom of the inside. Am I incorrect in trying to bowl lather in it? Are shaving mugs not for generating lather?

I am used to using a wide open bowl (as suggested by TGQ) and get decent lather that way using my crappy AoS pure badger brush.

    Advise?

I used to use my shaving mug to generate lather-- I would drop my puck of col conk soap in the bottom and lather off the top of the puck. I found it was a bit restricting using the mug, but it worked. It pretty much depends on how wide the mug is-- do you have enough room to whip with the brush...

I have since stopped lathering in the mug and now lather on my face which I find is easier and wastes less soap, and I can also keep my lather warm by drizzling a bit of hot water at the base of the brush when I re-lather for another pass, so I also don't need a scuttle. But I'll never know the joys of mixing in different creams, etc with this method...

There are many ways to lather. I usually keep my soaps in a variety of mugs and pots and just load up the brush with lather and complete lathering on my face. I have a georgetown scuttle but frankly its a nice display piece.

So, if you use the mug to lather, how do you go about it?
Fill the mug with hot water, soften for a few minutes, drain and whip?
I'm keen to use a mug, just not sure exactly how best to do it.

x2 on this question. I have tried keeping the soap puck in it's little plastic container. I have been getting the brush wet, snapping the excess water off it and then hitting the puck...once a little lather starts I move to the mug and try to get a lather going. I can get a little, but more would be nice for sure. I am going to try the puck at the bottom of the mug...whats more common?

I have read that wiki page - do you think "making lather on your face" is the proper way with the mug? Or the first method, where you use another bowl?

I always thought that a mug would actually get filled with warm water during the process of using it for lather... that's what I feel I'm missing.
The proper role of the mug.

Oh, and I hope my response didn't somehow come off sounding snotty. I'm just having a hard time figuring out how some of this old-fashioned stuff works together. =D

I USUALLY PUT ABOUT A TEASPOON OF HOT WATER ON THE SOAP IN IT'S OWN CONTAINER AND HAVE THE MUG WITH ENOUGH HOT WATER TO SOAK THE BRUSH TO GET IT WARM. WHEN READY TO LATHER EMPTY MUG AND REMOVE SOME WATER FROM BRUSH, SWIRL BRUSH ON SOAP TO PICK SOME UP AND THEN WHIP THE LATHER UP IN YOUR WARMED MUG. IF YOUR LATHER TOO THICK ADD WATER, TOO THIN MORE SOAP.

    FOR A VIDEO

TRY THIS ONE FAST FORWARD TO ABOUT 1:30 WHEN HE STARTS MAKING LATHER, SOAP IS IN CONTAINER THAT IS NOT VISIBLE, BUT USING THE MUG TO WHIP LATHER

I recommend that you get a bowl that is small from the base to the rim. Nothing like having to put your whole hand into the bowl in order to build the lather.
