Ah, this is the sort of thing that I am looking for, advice for or against what my straight razor teacher has been teaching me. I am doing quite well now with my Inox and hope to do even better tonight then I did last night.

    Shave # 4

Honed up again and fired up some TSD Cream and went to town and I am very impressed with the results. I think that it is safe to say that my skill with the straight is as good as my skill with the double edge. Perhaps within a week I will be able to pack up those double edge super speeds and pack them into the medicine cabinet and replace the whole lot of them with my trusty Inox. I can't help but imagine all the dollars my son will save when he starts using my hardware. He will never have to buy blades ever saving him a small fortune.

    Default waterstones

i'd like to weigh in on this one if i may...

but first a qualifier. i have yet to purchase a blade or try my first shave. my barber still does my kisser. my experience here is with the question of the stones. i sharpen knives as a hobby, and know a little about stones. my experience with sharpening a cut-throat is nil, but i hope that some of my knife knowledge is transferable.

Norton invented Carborundum aka silicon carbide which is the hardest known artificial substance (they were trying to makes diamonds). they've been in the business over 100 yrs and make really good stones. mostly artificial. but their waterstones are ruinously expensive. i've never used ones cuz i like the King stones. they are real japanese waterstones and they put on a real nice edge on a blade. for 1/2 the price of Norton.

so check em out. Lee Valley sells them at a good price. just keep in mind that the japanese grit grading is different from the american, so you may not get what you think you are, as with all things, do the research first so you don't get ripped off.

as for kitchen knives. they're easy....but thats another forum.

p.s. my King waterstone 4000 can put a mirror finish on a blade.

What do you do for a shave box? I know that there is a group buy this month for this sort of thing.

a box into which you put your razors so that they don't get ruined in transport. Some people put them in boxes so as to keep all of their shave items together in one box, making it a bit more convenient. Group buys is when a group of forum members pool their dollars so as to buy a large lot of an item brining down the cost to each of them. Some companies will sell their products in bulk more cheaply per item then they would if a smaller amount was ordered.

ok this is cool. i love old stuff like this. i can dig it.

to be honest, since i don't have any blades yet i'll be putting off a cool little number like these babies for awhile. when the time comes i'll probably put it all into a gladstone bag. (another one of my little hobbies). if yer interested here's what they look like:

the first one is my carry-on luggage. the second has all my guitar pedals, cables, tools and stuff. third i use for luggage. fourth i keep sharpening stones and stuff in. the last two are actually tool bags that i use for luggage as well.

a small version of this should work nicely as a "shave box"

but i digress... this is for yet another forum...

you are right. my grandfather used such a small version of those as a shaving bag, although I cannot tell whether or not it was specifically sold for such a use. I will see if I can find a photo of it

wow, sorry for the thread hijack guys!

Not really I hijack since I did ask about straight razor cases and hagalhoo is talking about cases that someone might carry a straight razor in.

    Shave #5

Also very good better than shave #4 I think, but still room to improve. Midway through a tub of The Shave Den Almond Shave Cream which is probably one of my top three favorite shave creams available. I will finish it up tomorrow morning after my shower then will go back to the tube of Kiss My Face Lavender that I have in the den.
