Thanked: 3newbie questions
So I have always wanted to try a straight razor and see how it does. So I've been reading around here and think I want to give it a go. My only problem is I want to try it before I buy it. I've used a safty razor before but I don't know if there's much of a difference. I was thinking of going to a barber that does a good shave to see how I like it.
So that brings me to my question, does anyone know of a Barber in Edmonton that does straight razor shaves? I figure that would be a good way to test out a good shave with it first, and I've always wanted to try having someone give me a shave. I know I've seen a few guys around here from Alberta.
P.S. This site is lots of fun to browse.

No knwoledge of any barber north of the US/Canada border but I will say in my opinion there is a difference between a barber doing a striaght razor shave on you and you doing one on yourself. Don't think that you can tell if you like it from a barber doing the job for you.

yeah, you need a good barber too. seems that most of the people who go to a barber get rather unpleasant experience.
the thing is that it's not the quality of the shave that keeps people at this. if you have enough motivation and persistance you'll get to the point of fantastic shaves sooner or later. but it does take some time, more like months.

Welcome to SRP. You might look in the telephone book and call around to barber shops listed and ask if they do a whole shave with a straight razor. I know in the shop two doors down from where I work they do a pass with a shavette an then go over it with some kind of electric clipper. If you do get into straight razor shaving I think you will find it that best way to shave.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

As an inexpensive way to try it out, you might buy yourself a shavette or a feather. If you find it isn't for you, toss it and you haven't lost much. You might also pick up an inexpensive razor from Ebay, have it honed for around $20.00 and if you don't like it, you can probably resell it on Ebay or on to one of our members, provided it's a good one. A work of warning: Don't buy a Zeepke or anything made in Pakistan. That would turn you off to straight razors real fast! Research the forums for good razors. To have it honed, there are lots of good honemeisters in the forums. Check out Utopian's offer. I won't speak for him, but he worth sending a PM. And welcome to the site.
