Thanked: 1903Jimmy has a point there. Beginner's guide to straight razor shaving - Straight Razor Place Wiki has an entry on razor purchasing. Straight Razors - Straight Razor Place Wiki needs some more work, but may also be useful.

Thanked: 3795Be sure to check out the list of razors to avoid. When in doubt avoid any new razor on ebay that costs less than $75. If you buy a Zeepk or a Krieger for $10 to $15, you will have just bought yourself a butter knife, not a razor.

the only good quality that matters functionally is the edge, so that would mean that it's honed by somebody with experience. that would also avoid you gambling on the end result by purchasing unhoned razor and sending it out.
the classifieds here are a good place to find such razors and they can be quite inexpensive especially if you don't insist on immaculate look.

I got started with a starter kit from Vintage Blades-- they sell a package with a new Dovo razor, strop, mug, brush, and some soap for a pretty reasonable price (I picked the Dovo with the ebony wood scales).
