Vintage Blades 'fabric webbing' strop
Hello All,
I got a set from Vintage Blades as a gift. The strop that came with it is a Latigo Leather combined with a 'fabric webbing' on the second strop.
Has anyone else had any experience with this webbing strop? It seems really awkward to me to use. The stropping isn't a nice smooth stroke, it's sort of bumpy and seems to want to bend around the edge of the blade even when I use minimal pressure. I have to take a lot of extra care to get the blade to lay flay. Now maybe that's my inexperience with stropping, but it almost seems like it takes to much effort to not muck up the blade.
I like the latigo a lot, just not sure on this fabric webbing. I've only stropped 3 times (being a noob). Should I just hang loose and give it a little more time?
Get another stop with a linen on it?
Thanks.

I'd give it a bit more time. Some of the folks on here who have a lot more experience than myself seem to really like it, albeit taking a bit of getting used to. I'm a linen guy myself but I'm sure you will get plenty of feedback to guide you. Again, many folks have these and seem to enjoy so there must be some method to the madness.
In addition, you could PM Jim user name: vintageblades and ask his advice, he's a great guy and one of the top vendors I've ever worked with as far as advice and guidance on his and all products.
Enjoy,
Joe

This is from the description of your strop on Jim's website:
"In addition, there is also a second strop, securely attached at the top, made of a unique fabric webbing that resembles the look and feel of the old vintage strops. Testing done with this material has found it to be superior to traditional cotton and linen fabrics for pre-stropping."
All I have ever used is Linen for pre-stropping, but Jim wouldn't sell something that he doesn't have faith in. I'd contact him for more info and give yourself some more time with the webbing. If anyone from SRP has tried the product I'm sure they will be willing to chime in their opinions as well.

I think you should lighten up a little
on the pressure, not the question

I have this strop, and use both sides, with really good results. Note, I hold *both* of the rings together when I strop-- to keep it as 1 unit. It provides extra support esp. when I use the webbing side.

I don't know if it is the same strop as I cannot tell from the photo on the web page but I have the SRD Premium 1 with the nylon webbing and I think it is great. If they would have had the options they now have when I first got it I would have selected linen but I am glad that they only had the webbed. That is all that I use now. Subject to change depending on my mood but I think I'm getting better results with it.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
