Thanked: 0Newbee (sort of) from Guyana, S.A
Good day all,
Thank you for putting up such an informative forum. 30 odd years ago, I shaved with a straight razor. For reasons unknown to me, I stopped. Now I want to begin shaving with a straight razor again.
I am down in Guyana, South America volunteering with the indigenous Amerindians in one of the most remote areas in the western hemisphere. To say that straight razor shaving paraphernalia is difficult to find is to put it mildly. And shipping anything into the country is both difficult and expensive.
I will be traveling up to the States and Canada in July and August which will be the only opportunity I will have to purchase my supplies. Since my time is going to be very limited and I have NO idea what to purchase, is there some experienced person in the forum who could put together a "kit" for me. I will rely on your experience to include those things about which you have said, "I sure wish I had known...or had this when I first started."
If someone is willing to do this, please give me some idea of costs and I will PayPal you or wire money by Western Union to cover expenses. Keep in mind that when I come back into Guyana I will be here for two years, so I will need a two year supply of whatever it is I need. Once we connect, I will give you a Stateside address where things can be sent.
Just to give you an appreciation of where I am. We have no phone, no mail...power is developed from solar panels, wind generators and gas/diesel generators. The closest "city" is a dusty little settlement 4 hours away...we can get cellphone reception there, but only within the country...with some coverage in Brazil. The largest city, Georgetown, the capital, is 10 hours away by bus. Our only link with the outside world is the internet which we acquire with a satellite link.
Thank you for you assistance

welcome to SRP, glad you managed to find internet over there.
a 2 year supply kit should be
razor, strop, hone (a barber's hone is fine for maintenance, but you'd probably want something coarser as well in case you nick the blade)
brush
shaving soaps - 4 pucks should be more than enough
alum block could be quite useful too
aftershave - you probably know what you like already, no need to change that.
i'd suspect that you are already using brush and soaps or creams
so it may be just the razor+strop+hone(s) that you want.

Welcome aboard, wow, I guess I should not complain about having difficulty finding B&M locations near me anymore!
