    Here's a shopping list:
-Buy the Van De Haagen shaving set. Its basic but if you can lather with it you can lather with anything. Also its a good jump off point as joesixpack pointed out. Unless you have a research fund like the economic bailout. Then buy whatever you want. The advantage to starting with the cheapo set means you'll develop more skill lathering, and you'll be able to see if you want a brush that can handle cream or soap better, whether you lather in a mug, in a bowl, in your hand, on your face etc (which i recently found out, there is a difference and it will impact your brush choice). Also I think the bowl itself is worth $10. Nice and big and comfy to hold. Best thing I own for lathering.
-Lynn's DVD. If it doesn't help you learn it will at least provide a lot of info for your research
-A styptic agent, be it powder, a block, or a pencil. Because you will desanguinate yourself. (you'll like the irony in that there is a brand of razor: Sanguine... somewhat ominous but oh well. Don't buy their razors. They're crap. The shavettes are decent though)

PS: Please can you at least write some articles for papers like NYT and WP? Let's get the word out!

Default Maiden voyage was a succes!!

Shaved the other night for the first time. NOW I UNDERSTAND THE PASSION FOR THIS!! Only two spots that needed syptic pencil. No need for a tourniquet . I bought a pig butt hair brush at the local apothecary and worked fine for me (like I know, being a novice). I used a coffee cup. Worked well (but the coffee tasted funny afterward). The Lynn Abrams DVD was a life saver. Everyone has been so nice and helpful thanks

Congrats on your first shave with a straight and welcome to our world!! A word of caution, beware of RAD and the other AD's that are associated w/ straight shaving.

I was interested in his YouTube video because it came from the standpoint of a novice. I thought he had a lot of guts to demonstrate what a beginner went through. It served as encouragement for me. Now I have mastered the shaving part (although I haven't mastered stropping and honing) and I was wondering what he had learned during a comparable period (2 years).

On a side note, the DVD referenced in an earlier post was helpful and I still watch it occasionally as a refresher. When you see someone doing this and relating to beginners it encourages you a lot. I was probably more reluctant to hone a razor than any of the things that come with straight shaving because I feared ruining one and put it off for six months. Then it came time where I really needed to do this if I was going to continue shaving this way. I watched the DVD and afterward was able to make myself do it.

Welcome to our world. You are a goner now. I wonder which AD will grab hold of you first.
