Thanked: 259QUESTIONS ABOUT NORTON 4000/8000
just opened my norton 4000/8000 i purchased from vintagebladesllc and i was surprised to find the stone feels more coarse than i thought. i have a woodstock/steelex 1000/6000 waterstone i got off amazon and the 1000 side feels less coarse that either side of the norton. does the norton "slick" up with use?. this is my first experience with waterstones and need help as i do not want to ruin any of my SR blades.thanks again for all the help from everyone on here

You will need to "lap" it. I had the same problem when I first got mine. If you check in the wiki and search you will find much info on lapping the hone, including the grid process along with best practices on how to do it. I myself use 220 grit Norton sandpaper wet/dry and then progress to 1000 Norton wet/dry on a piece of tile I have in the house. There is also information as far as smoothing out the edges to prevent damage to your blades.
Enjoy

Thanked: 4942The 4K side of the Norton is pretty grainy at first. Lap about 1/8 inch off it until it feels pretty smooth and you're there.

Thanked: 4I have also purchased a Norton combination stone kit (220/1k + 4k/8k + lapping stone)
As Lynn said in the previous post, I had to lapped them about 1/8 inch in order to get them very smooth and flat.
I'm not an expert yet in honing but I got pretty good result off of the 8k + 100 strops.

I didn't lap my 4000/8000 before first use. Maybe that why my edge was kind of itty-shay after all was said and done.
It actually does cut hair though (and that was after I did a thumbnail test AFTER the 8K run), it's just not a joy to shave with. I'll be lapping more firecely than Jeff Gordon this weekend, and making another go of it!
Thanks.
