Thanked: 0Noob Post
Hey guys,
this is another noob post from me. I've attempted to get into this a handful of times but i think i'm finally set up for it.
Dovo Prima Klang
Hanging Strop
Home Made 1/2 Micron Pasted Diamond Strop
Vintage Belgian Combo Stone
Vintage Badger Brush
Mug Soap
i've shaved 3 times now and it's been a little rough. I'm going to try working a smaller angle when i shave on wednesday.
I bought the razor from straight razor design so i know it was sharp when i got it.
I'm going to try to be more active on here in the future. I guess i just wanted to say hi and check in. I'll be reading up on some stuff and probably posting some "what the heck" stuff soon when i figure out that i have no idea what i'm doing.
Thanks for looking guys.

First , welcome to the forums... Congrats on your setup and starting to shave and have fun doing it. As for the shaving,,,,take it slow and don't try to do too much at first. i.e. just do the sides of your face the first couple of times. This way you can get the "feel" to what your doing with the blade, the pressure , angle etc. Once you get the hang of that then you can get more active on the other parts of the face and adding the other passes during the shave. ENJOY!!

Thanked: 29I'll bet dollars to doughnuts you are using too much pressure. Let it just glide with the edge doing the cutting not you pushing it through.

welcome michael, don't use that pasted strop.
the prima klang is extra hollow ground and the blade is quite flexible. many people find it harder to use these when they don't have very good technique. it'll get better.Last edited by gugi; 06-16-2009 at 12:03 AM.

Thanked: 0thanks guys!
i'll try letting off on the pressure and correcting the angle. i found that it didn't cut as much hair as i thought it would on the first pass.
i did have on razor honed by Tim Zowada which seemed to pretty much wipe the hair off in one pass. but i'm sure i'm just doing it wrong this time.
we'll find out how it goes tomorrow. i'll post some more info after the shave. thanks again guys!
i need some better soap too. or some cream. time to call SRD i guess

In my opinion its nice to have a hone hanging around so that you can learn to use it when you are up to it.

Proper preparation goes a long way. Tomorrow makes 2 weeks at this for me and besides a sharp razor so far it's been patience and preparation between every good shave and a nick job.

Thanked: 0another one under the belt.
well i tried a steeper angle and didn't see improvement.... it seemed to glide easier but really didn't cut any hair because i had to just about lay it flat on my face.
ahh well more to come on friday morning.

It's possible that it's been dulled through the stropping not being quite right. Do you think that may have happened? It really should cut them, even if lack of practise prevents a really close shave.
Palmolive do a cheap cream that's fantastic value. It's the European version that i use, so if you can get that it's worth a try.
I'm probably telling you something you already know, but an angle of two spines width from the face is a very good place to start.
Finally, are you stretching correctly? If you stretch against the grain the stubble will lift more, whereas with the grain will cause it to lay down.
Stick with it & you'll crack it!
