Thanked: 30Badger Hair Brush
Hello
I have been looking at badger brushes on Ebay. I noticed that the brushes advertised as Silver Tip Badger from several Asian sites are about 1/3 the cost as brushes from anywhere else. Has anybody purchased one of these brushes? And what is the quality ?

grading is pretty meaningless as it is not standardized. everybody wants to call their brushes 'silvertip' so that they can charge more for them, but I'll take simpson's best any time to most 'silvertips'. There's a lot more to a brush than the color of the tips, e.g. if they've been trimmed, what is the density of the knot, the stiffness and the length of the bristles, how deep the knot is set in the handle...
If you can, please post links to the particular brushes you want more info about so that you get correct comments

John Crowley sells very good brushes, I know, I have one. Support your local brush dealer.

Be wary of cheaper brushes shedding hairs throughout their lifespan. Everybody wants a deal, but sometimes you get just what you pay for.

I have a couple of the cheap Chinese "silvertips". Wouldn't call them sivertip myself but I will say they are excellent value and I use mine more often than my kents, shavemacs and B&B posh one!
I mostly face lather and I find them just right for me. Nice middling size and loft and work well with soaps and creams.
Mine are the Virtual Village ones. Cheap doesn't always mean rubbish.

I'm not that keen on buying a brush from ebay. Pictures don't tell the whole story, and I am quite skeptical of a seller's knowledge about them. I save my money and purchase them from a reputable source (we have many vendors here) as I know what I will be getting. The only shaving items I have purchased on ebay are razors. And that's only after I have satisfied myself that it is worth the money spent.

Thanked: 137If you're after a cheap badger brush, a lot of people here recommend the Tweezerman brush off Amazon - under $15, proper badger, reliable, and not a bad starter brush at all.

I am with Dan, sellers on ebay typically have nothing to loose by leading you astray. You might not see that seller again on ebay ever. Forum members here stand to loose a lot by leading you astray, if it gets out on this forum that someone lead you astray no one will every buy from him again.
Another way to accomplish this is to pick a manufacterer from comments here and buy one of theirs from what ever internet vendor your can find to sell it to you on the cheap. Since its a well regarded maker they have a reputation to maintain and are not likely to take advantage of you.
