Thread: Messed up due to overzealousness

Greetings all!
arghhh I was polishing a new razor I got with Maas and wiped off all of the beautiful gold wash on the blade, didn't know it was so weak. Is there any way I can restore it? I can't believe that I messed this up.

Yup, MAAS takes off gold wash in a hurry, as gold wash is only a few molecules thick usually. I'm genuinely sorry you had to learn the hard way.

I'm not sure about replacing it, but you might consider leaving it off. A lot of folks really dislike gold wash because it's so thin, and comes off so easily. You end up with it wearing off half way after a few years of drying your razor on a soft towel. Seriously.


If you're set on restoring the gold wash, I vaguely recall a member talking about doing that here. Hopefully they'll chime in.

That's a shame that happened.

I have a Boker King Cutter which used to have gold wash. But it also had quite a bit rust on the side when I got it, so I had to make a decision: 1) Leave the gold wash but also have rust, or 2) remove the rust and also the gold wash in the process. I chose to remove the rust, and the gold wash came too. But it polished up very nicely, and there's something very clean looking about it now.

I know it sucks, but all is not lost as you can now give it a nice overal shiny look. (Gotta look at the glass as half full right?)

I decided early on I prefer clean, shiney blades vs. goldwash. My Dovo has a lot of gold wash on the blade and spine, but I bought it for the blade and scales (it's an Ebony). The gold is fading fast but it does not bother me.

If you like decoration on the blade, look for something etched which would be permanent.

Condolences. That's roughly USD 400 worth of gold down the proverbial drain. You might want to add a fitting piece to the FAQ, something along the lines of "what do I need to think of before I attempt to clean a blade".

Ha! "Keep the polishing cloth". Very nice! gratewhitehuntr it could still be yours for 500 USD if still interested!. Well I'll accept a shiny blade over one with gold wash and minor rust/tarnish. On a happier note I got my 1056 Boker and 1339 Ivory Tang yesterday in the mail. Awesome! wanted those beauties since day 1. Some pics i just snapped. Happy fathers Day to all of the fathers here.

my 1056 is my favorite Boker.

Is the 1056 a razor that you can find often? I loved the worked spine and the decorated scales. How much would one in great condition go for?
