Thread: lapping the Nortons

Thanks every body, you help me improve my honeing skills. If the stones are not properly lapped or flatten, the honeing is a waste of time. I am adding the 600 grit sandpaper to my honeing accessories. THANKS, Juan.

I go with the initial lapping on the Nortons as well. The 1K and 8K at first are mainly to ensure they are flat. The newer Norton 4K's are a bit more grainly than the older models and I have found you initially need to lap past the grainy feeling to where it starts to feel smooth. Typically, this is around 1/8 inch. Once lapped, I will re-lap at ever new honing session. I would normally recommend re-lapping as Glen has indicated at 12-18 razors or where the metal particles can't be rubbed out with the finger under water. F8Kor the Nortons, I normally just use their flattening plate, but the DMT 325 works fine as well. The Shapton Glass Lapping Plate is OK on the 4K and 8K. I just don't like tearing it up on the 1K when there are cheaper alternatives.
