learning curve again, help
Like everybody, it seems, anxious to perform mi first straight Razor shave, I purchase on the internet a razor and a strop. Disaster and frustation. I come back to this site to read more an realize that It was a non pre sharped razor. Internet US online shops again ( I live in brazil where is impossible to find equipament) to buy a 4000/8000 water stone.
Im afraid my razor is not a good one. It Is a Flamingo Ultimate Pro #150 - Solingen.
Questions:
1 - Is this razor a good one or should I buy a new one and use this to learn how to hon.
2 - Did I purchased the correct stone ?
3 - I noticed that when stroping, very light pressure, the blade do not touch the entire strop but only the borders, what sould I do ?
4 - Am I on the right way ?
Thanks

1. Don't know for sure, but I'd be doubtful about it, see Brands of Straight Razors to avoid
2. There's a wealth of knowledge on these forums regarding that stone, so yes, but you may want a higher grit finishing stone too at some point (or pasted strop or, or… the possibilities are a little mind boggling actually).
3. Something sounds wrong, is the strop not flat or the blade warped or something else?
4. Oh yes. You're asking questions here. Most everything I learned about Straights, I learned here.

Thanked: 3795Here's a general rule of thumb to follow:
If it is a new razor that is not named Dovo, Thiers-Issard, or Boker, and is not a custom-made razor, then you should probably avoid it unless you have read recommendations for it in this forum. An example of the latter would be the Double Arrow, with reservations by some.
Perhaps it would be better to provide an "Only Buy These" list?

Hi Dario,
I never saw that razor before, hope it works.
Honing the first razor you are going to use is not a good thing at all.
That stone is good, U.S. favorit.
Yes, you can use finer grits after the 8k, but you can shave out
of the 8k. And shave well.
For learning purposes, I suggest to work only with the stone until
you can get a good edge from it. Then you can try different media.
What strop are you using? Is it flat? Perhaps you are holding it with too much strenght.
Best,
FelipeLast edited by gaucho; 07-31-2009 at 04:39 AM.

Thanked: 1903This razor? Flamingo Straight Razor #150. If so, I've never seen it before. At 55USD, it is either a great bargain, or a costly mis-investment.
