Thread: Using both hands?

I have just ordered a straight razor and strop. I have watched several videos on straight razor shaving and most show switching hands depending on which side of your face you are shaving. I am leery of trying to shave with my off hand. Is it a skill I should try to develop or can I simply shave with my dominant hand?

i was like you at first.
both hands is way more ergonomical, and speedy.
its easy to aquire. within a few shaves itll feel natural.
plus, i f you ever sprain your wrist or break fingers on your good hand, youve got a backup.

You can shave one handed, as shown in xmans video, but i recommend you use two. You'll be surprised how you get to grips with it (pun intended)!
Just try using the non dominant hand for more tasks & it'll get the idea. Maybe clean your teeth.
I never thought i'd be able to do it. First time i put the blade to my face with my left hand, i was all over the place. It took no time for me to master it & it makes things easier.

I also suggest that you learn using both hands right off the bat. I was suprised how quickly I became comfortable using the razor in my left (non-dominant) hand. It might feel awkward the first couple of times, but with practice you'll won't notice a difference at all from one hand to the other. Actually, I'm better at shaving the left side of my face now.

+1 with the above. There are members here who do use just one hand. For me, I found it easier to learn to use both hands than not.

I am not pro dominant hand versus both hands. Just saying that is a skill I've not picked up and so far haven't pursued it. I am getting along fine with the one hand as of now. Sometime in the future if I get the inspiration I may go through the learning curve but not yet. I don't doubt that it is a very efficient way to shave.

Need to develop that skill myself.

I would start by practicing with a butterfly knife in your off hand, this will build up the needed skills and confidence to use your off hand wilst shaving.

jk. dont learn to shave with your other hand, "Just Do It"!

Thanks for all the responses. It looks like I should develop the skill needed. I think I will start with my DE and also practice with a butter knife or something similar.

I recommend working with your off hand as much as you can as well. I can't shave WTG on my left cheek and sideburn with my right hand for example, but I don't need to either. Be careful of the razor as you pass it between hands. This is a prime opportunity for a few hand clips. I rapped my knuckle a few years ago.

It stung and bled some, but healed perfectly. There isn't even a scar now!
