Thanked: 0Solingen "Uncle Sam" Straight Razor
Hi there,
Can anyone tell me about this straight razor? I showed it to a respected antique dealer who dated it to between 1900 and 1920. It came in a black case that reads Solingen Star Co., Solingen, Germany. Apparently, it is a "double stabilizing piece" or "full hollow grind." The blade reads "Uncle Sam" on one side. The other side reads, "W.P.P.B.T.& S. Co., 317 W. Berks, Phila, PA." It's got an unusual translucent handle. I'm not only trying to date the blade, but I'm curious as to what the handle material is.
Thanks in advance,
Becky

I can't tell you anything about your razor, but I can tell you that most people here would want to see photos of the blade itself.

I think the metal caps are made out of nickel-silver

Hi there,
Sorry for the delay. I'm new at this. Thanks for the input. Here's a picture of the full blade. Any other info would be appreciated.

Looks like it'd be pretty nice once polished up.
Can't really help much besides guessing that the box was mismatched. There are some great illustrations about the grind and stabilizers on the database submission page, if you're interested in what those characteristics mean:

Thanked: 2the scales look similar to those on a SatinEdge. Does it appear all cloudy and crackley within the scales? Mine was and the first time I messed with it the whole thing slowly crumbled.
