Thanked: 0Hi.. A french bat may be known by other names elsewhere..It is a strop on a wooden frame like a paddle. it is used just before you head to the strop. The one I have is made from Carborundum me thinks.Quiet old still in original box complete with unopened and unused buffing paste. It is quiet well used but still a cool find..The old Barber that used to work for me years ago( image a grey haired and bearded elvis that was a wealth of knowledge on rock and roll and could sharpen a straight with his eyes closed).. Sorry got carried away reminiscing.. Where was I, oh yeah. He remebers his old master using them in the day, Was a big surprise to him when I dragged it out.. I am sorry I have not posted pics yet .They will follow.. I am so exicted about sharing my stuff I do not know where to start.. cheers

I'm glad you joined, and feel free to share as many stories and reminisce as much as you like! I'm still very new to straights, and it's the stories that really excite me. Like you, I don't have anyone in my group of friends or family that care about my razors. They think I'm crazy for what I do and what I collect. In other words...you're in good company!

Thanked: 0Thanks Dave.. I have met so many characters doing what I do. So many stories, Naturally the old barbers have the best by far! Often they have left a straight or 2! One of my favorites simple has J M O Grant barber of Florence st wynum Manly QLD Australia 1950 simply written on the box.. he retired in 1950.It is a hollow ground Abham Brooksbank Malinda Works Sheffield. Well Honed with ivory or bone handles I am not sure of which, in unrestored condition. I now am the care taker and that makes me proud that these razors are apreciated so many years after...

Welcome to SRP ! I go to a barber who is 89 years old and still cutting hair. He could of retired long ago but would rather work. Anyhow I look forward to pics of your razors and I would love to see some pics of your hones as well.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 3795Like what others said, what Jimmy said. Pics are always appreciated.
Also, I really appreciate it when genuine barbers join in--even if they are bald! You are link to some of what so many of us are interested in so thank you for finally speaking up.

Thanked: 0Thanks Mate.. Reminds me of a barber I know from Tamworth NSW Australia that told me He was retiring only to find Him with scissors in His hand one month later. I said what happened? Reply was I missed everybody...
I know how that feels. Been in and out of this game for years..
Walk out one door and come in the next..
I can not describe the feeling of owning a business where some customers have been coming to for 75 years plus...
Guaranteed pics will follow. Never restored a straight but I am gonna give it ago.
I am sure to be asking for help!
one more thing ! It is against policy to swap not sell Razors etc? I don't want to bend the rules? I have more than a few doubles. Just cant do the bay thing!
Cheers
