thankyou for all your wonderfull advice. I might just go to the Art Of Shaving in Philly.
I'm left handed. Is there anything to be concerned about with straight razors? Somethings just aren't made for lefties to use.
Also, one thing I'm afraid of is accidentally slicing my own throat and killing myself. I know I probably cut myself, but what are the chances of me actually seriously wounding myself, or pulling a Sweeney Todd on myself?

Very low, unless that is your intention.
Don't use a slicing motion.
Watch out for your fingers and other appendages.
Never bump the mirror, allow someone to frighten you, shave naked, shave on a slippery floor, shave in the shower, or play with the razor.
Watch out when you move the razor from side to side across your face.
Respect the blade!
You'll note how few people ask if they might cut their hand off using a steak knife, though the tools are very similar.

Many of us here seem to agree that you can shave only with your dominant hand (whether right or left). However, many of us shave using both right and left hands (only one at a time!) because if you can do that, it's often easier and faster.
Actually, whichever hand is holding the razor, you usually are using the other hand to stretch the skin taut.

welcome
Hello and welcome to SRP
Yes you will nick yourself with a straight razor, but if you start with a straight up and down motion (nothing side to side) you should be ok. Blade angle and motion of the blade are very important. Respect the blade is a good point which has already been said. Xman is correct, just jump in the water is fine. Get a good razor and start. Which hand is dominant makes no difference, after a time you will use both hands anyway. Read the forums and the wiki, you will learn alot. Get the dvd on straight razor shaving from straight razor designs and get started.
Good luck

good, I was worried that most straight razors would only work in the right hand.
Thanks for the help everyone!
