You can also go to any Walgreens and get Williams soap and a boar brush. Total cost less than $8.

I'm going to quibble with this. Canned foam is designed to convince you that it works, but it doesn't. The foaminess was designed for consumer appeal, but it uses alcohol to achieve it which actually dries, not lubricates the skin. Still ... a bad choice.

    I love TGQ.

You can use the usual canned stuff if you want, its just really expensive and full of Lord-only-knows-what chemicals!

You can pick up a cheapy synthetic brush for under £10, and you can actually just use normal hand soap if you want to. Failing that you can get some cheaper soaps instead. Then you just need an old coffee mug or something to lather up in! Simples!

If you like the results from these items and want to step it up a notch then you can get a good quality badger hair brush and soap. I've got a best badger brush from Trumpers in Piccadilly and Trumpers Sandalwood soap which gives a great lather. Having tried a couple of brushes now, I've found the Silvertip badger hair is a bit too fine and I prefer the stiffer grades of hair to get a really thick lather, but try a few out and see which you like!

You can go to Bath & Body Works and pick up some C.O. Bigelow cream, which is just rebranded Proraso. I believe they sell two different sizes for $5 and $10.

MOST canned goos are in fact bad. There are good ones out there, but they cost $5 for a can half the size. Neutrogena for men comes to mind. It comes out of the can as a gel-like cream and you work it into a lather. However, this means that in three months you might buy three cans of cream, spending $15. In three months you might have instead bought the VDH set and two extra pucks of soap, $10 + $2 +$2, spending $14. And every month thereafter, a $2 soap instead of a $5 can starts seeming cheaper.

And at very worst, you can pick up just a puck of shave soap and rub it in your hands an on your face to develop a thin lather or very watery lather. It'll still work, just be a royal pain. This is what I've always done in the sticks or at a hotel, shaved with bar soap.

Fokes, he said cream not soap. The cheapest quality cream that I have seen thus far is from Derby and costs approximatly $3 per tube.

I have some BB&W Bigelow in the tube and it's just like Proraso. They even say it's an Italian import on the website.

Try Tom's of Main shave cream. It's pretty natural for a mass produced off the store shelf cream. You might have to pay a visit to Amazon.com though.

I got mine at an overstock grocery outlet.

I don't have a brush but this works pretty good anyways. Even better than the neutrogena goo I used before I had any shave cream.
