Thread: Soap questions

I've decided on buying my soap from Trumpers, and i'm undecided on scents as of yet.

Sandalwood,
Lime,
Coconut.

Are the scents that intrigue me, but I can't settle on one. Could anyone give advice or their opinion on the fragrances or the other soaps they make.

Would it be worth going to a store that sells things "like" these just to understand the smells myself, or will the fragrance be different with a shaving soap ?

I haven't tried any Trumpers yet, but I did have the sample pack from Truefitt and Hill, which contained some creams with Limes, Almond, Lavender etc. I really liked the scents, but I'm not sure how you can get an idea without smelling them in a soap or cream, as they do have that soapy undertone along with their described scent.

Up till now I've just been using Mitchell's Wool Fat soap with a little Musgo Real cream mixed in, which has been incredibly kind to my skin. I haven't ventured out into the world of shaving soaps and creams properly yet as I was trying to keep my shave experience as uniform as possible while I was learning to use a straight razor and didn't want to complicate things with different soaps, creams, or razors. However, I'm now getting to the stage where I want to experiment a little so I would be interested in your experiences of Trumper's soaps when you get them if you'd be willing to come back and post your opinions. I've read a few glowing reviews of Trumper's soaps, but a fellow newbie perspective would be welcome.

You may have to wait a while as it will be my "first time"
I'll be happy to tell you how it smelt and lathered up if you wish though.

I may go to Lush and inconspicuosly smell their products.

I was tempted to try the Lush range of shave creams, but apparently they're the brushless type of cream that you smear onto your face with your hand. That doesn't sound nearly as much fun as building a lather with my brush, so I didn't bother.

I will do, and nothing as of yet this is my real first time
Unless you mean non-straight razor shaving, then it's been a Gilette Fusion and hot water. Works unusually well considering the blades must be incredibly dull by now.

You're right that doesn't sound like fun, useful in a hurry but you shouldn't hurry when you have no need to. They may be useful to use as a point of reference for smell though with soap or cream purchases online.

The brushless shave creams can be used with a brush. it works well if you put some on your face and then use a damp brush to work it

Try The Shave Den - under their 'Store' tab they have a sample store, where you can buy samples of various soaps and shave creams from well-known brands for very cheap - could help you make up your mind. They don't sell GFT soap, but do sell GFT creams, so you could buy samples of those to help you decide on the soap to buy (since the creams and soaps will smell very similar, if not identical).

ETA: try TGQ as well - they sell sample-sized pucks (1/2oz) of soap for a very reasonable price, so you may find something you like there. Basically, sample until you find that one magic soap, then buy a full-sized puck.

Sandalwood is a soft woodsy scent. Clean but not overpowering, I personally like this one.

Lime can be refreshing on a hot day, but scents can differ from company to company many of the guys I know like Lime.

I would suggest starting with the Sandalwood.

Sandalwood differs a LOT from company to company, as well...but yeah, the Trumpers one is pretty nice, if the soap's anything like the skin food.
