Thanked: 0I have a Mehaz piece of metal. Bought it as my first straight razor 18 years ago and have been frustrated w it ever since.
I finally spoke to jerrod at The Superior Shave in Florida over the phone from Canada about 6 years ago. I ended up buying a razor (then several more from him). He never commented on my Mehaz specifically but after me telling him what I was doing to hone and strop it, assuring me I was doing it correctly he said he could’ve no reason why it wouldn’t be a shave ready edge. He assured me if I bought a Dovo or other razor from him it would work out for me to my satisfaction. He was right. I now own and maintain 9 razors which I use daily w great success and satisfaction.
The Mehaz has bedeviled me. Today I just put it through another round of stoning... this time 75 passes on three different stones, a smooth black(?), a 1,000 and then a 6,000 grit stone. 25 each on a green and then a red pasted strop, a plane nylon strop for 40 laps/side, and a leather strop again 40 laps/ side. I swear if this doesn’t give me a satisfactory edge I’m going to break the blade so I never have to think about it again!
FYI-It’s stamped on the tang, Solingen Made in Germany. Grrr!

Thanked: 0So, short version is that it shaved worthy this morning. Not like one of my Bokker etc... razors but it was the best it’s ever shaved and was acceptable.
To see what happens w it going forward, I’m going to use some green and then red paste again this afternoon 25x per side, and then nylon and leather strop 40x per side. If it shaves comparable to today or better then I won’t smash it and will consider putting it into my rotation.
LOL for the comments below. I’m on pandemic time and our illLiberal (pseudo-Conservative) government is ensuring we all have time for mundane honeydo projects.

Thanked: 580I had one years back that was stamped solingen,no makers mark.
Was a cheap knock off pretty sure, soft steel like it hadn't been heat treated at all.

Thanked: 0I hear you. I just did my stropping as described above. We’ll see tomorrow what the future for it holds.
I paid good money for it back when, and from a somewhat reputable supply shop (In Las Vegas LOL). I just hate giving up on things mechanical when I can’t objectively attribute a failure. As indicated, I’m ever hopeful but also a realist. I had felt I’d never given it a fair shake after I was able to confirm for myself that it wasn’t just operator error.
I will know over the coming days, possibly as early as tomorrow. Today’s result showed promise as it was the best it had ever shaved and probably 90% satisfactory. Time will tell if it can hold it’s edge over a few daze.

Thanked: 0Well it does shave but not great comparatively. I’ll let it hang around in case I go on an extended trip somewhere, some day. A man can dream. Cheers all!
