Thanked: 0angle of the blade
compleatly new- and i need to know what angle to hold the blade to the surface- i did some reading and it said to hold it at a 90 degree to the face-- so like a ice scraper- but i was watching vidoes and for the looks of it it looks more like a 10 degree angle to the face- so beofr i get my blade in and complealty butcher my face- i think i should find out the angle i should use with the razor

the recommended angle for shaving your face is 30 degrees to start with for shaving WTG, for XTG and ATG passes often you need a shallower angle. If you want skin left on your face I would not go for a 90 degree angle.

Thanked: 127absolutly 30* or less. The more you increase the angle above 30* the more you risk cutting yourself. The more you decrease the angle the smoother the shave becomes, but generally 30* is the recommended angle for most of the face.

shave with the razor flat on your face at first, and slowly raise the angle as you shave to find the right angle for you. through practice you'll find the best angle to be far less than 90

A good guide would be to not raise the spine of the razor more than 2 times the thickness of the spine off your face. anything above 2 times could result in a nice nick for sure.

Thanked: 1903Welcome to SRP,
You might find Shaving passes - Straight Razor Place Wiki useful. Comes with images of various blade angles for various shaving passes, too.

welcome
Beberlin picture post says it all.
I would like to add be careful with different point designs, I find that not only the blade angle but the point design is very important when you are learning to use a straight go slow and have fun

+1 on the comments. approx.30 degrees is where you need to be. once there you'll just need to play with the angle to get it right for you.

Where in heavens name did you read 90 degrees to the face? We need to put up a warning about wherever that came from. Thats how you make hamburger not shave hair.
