    Default Seeking to understand

How do strops and hones do their work? Why leather? Why is leather uniquely suited for this job? How does the hone do its job? Why stone? Does the hone actually strip metal from the blade?

My personal motto is question everything.

By your dragging your razor across them.

It isn't. Did your shaving teacher tell you that?

Actually, no. If you try hard enough, it will turn metal into gold. That's why we all love using them so much.

Maybe you want to start with this then: "Why is somebody with more than 500 posts still beginning threads in the newbies corner? How has me managed to overlook this, this, and this?" There may be more things to question in a similar fashion, only they don't belong here either.

yah, a personal motto of "question everything" doesn't really do a lot of good if you're too lazy to "investigate everything" yourself. it just serves to make people sick of you more quickly

hmm, one should consider using bacon fat instead of mineral oil to protect one's razor.
every morning- fry up a two sticks of bacon while you shave, and when you're all done shaving, you'll have some bacon, and some fresh fat to protect your razor!

Butter didnt take off enough material...and Metal on Metal just didnt get the job done.

    Seriously?

Its not all stone....youhave composite materials...like Nortons that arent actually stone.

Stone just works....it has for centuries.
