Hi there :)
Hey guys (and girls),
I'm new to the forum. Well... I've been lurking for a couple of weeks, but I've only just registered. After reading a book about SRS I got really interested and I've been gathering information on the subject eversince. That's kinda what led me here.
While browsing for info I ran across an ad on a Belgian vendingsite that offered a straight razor for only € 3,-!!! So I send the vendor an email asking if she still had the razor and if the price was really € 3,-. "Yeah" she said, "that's what one of them costs, but if you want all six of them it's € 18,- ex shipping." Worth a guess I figured and it was. There are a couple of nice ones and some are dodgy, but they all need a good hone. All of them pass the TNT (only just), but are far from sharp. Is a BBW and a coticule hone afterwards the way to go? Or do I need a coarser stone to start with? Also, there's a brandless one marked Best Quality that's really nice with a decorated spine, but it's mentiones in the not-to-buy-wiki... is it that bad?

Thanked: 1262You could try using coticule w/ thick slurry to set the bevel on them before you buy another stone.
See how it works and how fast your coti is.
How much honing experience do you have?

Errr... none. All of my know-how is purely theoretical (SRPwiki&threads) I thought I'd start honing a lesser razor to gain some experience and then move on to a nice one and start shaving with that.
I haven't got any hones yet either, but am planning on ordering them at the Belgian coticule quarry.

Thanked: 1262aaah... I would send at least one razor out to Bart to be honed. Its good to have a baseline to compare other razors too.
I'm guessing you are also new to straight razor shaving?
If so, i wouldnt mess w/ honing too much yet. It is hard to tell when a razor is shave ready when you are still learning.

Thanx, that's probably a good idea. That way I can start shaving right away. You guessed right, I'm new to all aspects of straigth razor shaving.
Bart is the honemeister from Belgium right? How much does he charge? Cuz the shipping back and forth will set me back at least € 15,- even though he's my "neighbour" and if the total exceeds € 50,- I'd rather buy a nice stone and experiment a bit myself.
Thanx for all the compliments! I was supprised at how nice some of them are when I unpacked my postal-presents Though they all have minor wear and some are really rusty. I'll try to restore all of em.
