Thanked: 3newbie straight shaver from SoCal
all right fella's and ladies,
heres some info on myself.
im 21 i usually "shave" with hair clippers, yes i know. that is why i am here sometime i use a gillet 3 blade disposable razor. but it irritates my skin. when i dont shave my face breaks out from irritation.
what i need is a beginner razor for as cheap as possible i dont want to spend alot of money especially if i decide not to stick with it.
are there any kits available?
i know i should search but im getting ready for bed but i will search in the mean time.
i know i need these basic things.
some sort of lather
after shave/lotion
a razor
anything else i need?

welcome
you'll need a strop too.
i've been thinking a bit about the 'may not be for me' and i think that you should seriously examine your expectations before you start.
it does take a while, probably few months, so unless you are prepared to give it a good try i'd recommend that you save your money altogether.
This being said, i just used a cartridge razor for 2 weeks and i'm glad i don't have to do it.

Thanked: 3i understand about that part also i just have to get a feel for it first in example finding a cheap razor to use instead of my disposable that irritate my skin. i have been looking for a forum like this for a while and my g/f was looking at buying me a kit. but i haven't heard anything about the company and i forgot the name. i am willing to give this as much time as it takes to get used to. i just dont have alot of money to spend on straight shaving.

Thanked: 326From one noob to another welcome aboard!
Your handle looks very familiar would you be happen to be on MA or HT by any chance?
Don't forget to pick a set of Norton waterstones. There's 2 left:
Amazon.com: Norton Waterstone Starter Kit: 220/1000 grit stone, 4000/8000 grit stone, SiC flattening stone: Home Improvement
For $115 you can't go wrong. These are said to be good starter kit. Once you get used to honing you can move on to Naniwa and everthing else. But
it's matter of preference.
Check out the classifieds. Most razors there go anywhere from 30-1000. The $30 ones are great to start with and are actually in good-to great condition.
You needn't worry about getting scammed. The members are very trustworthy I know that's hard to believe seeing as I'm new but if you've read some threads I have you'll know what I mean.
Best of luck
BTW there was a meet a while back in soca! Looked to be a great turnout those guys are coolLast edited by SiRed8; 08-12-2009 at 05:39 AM.

I don't know if you want to travel the potential 2 and 1/2 hours but if traffic is not bad you are looking at just over 1 and 1/2 hours on the 15. If you come you will be way ahead of most newbies in what you can potentially learn!
