Thanked: 0It's been a while, Double arrow still great begginer bet?
I haven't been here for a long time with to 3 lay offs(that sucked) due to the bad economy. One of the companies went completely out of business. There was no way I could afford to take up straights this past year.
However, with my b-day coming up in a few weeks, hopefully now is the time! When I was here last, the double arrow seemed like my best bet for a cheap but decent razor to start out with. Is that still the case? If so, I also remember there being a site where you could get one pre-honed, truely shave ready. I can't seem to find it now. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

I agree its a great razor to start with. Its cheap and does the job. I don't know if anyone is selling them prehoned but there are several people here who will hone it for you once you get it.

Im not knocking the DA....But why not keep an eye on the classifieds and see what happens. If you get the DA for 10$ youve still got to spend around 20$ to get it honed and then theres the shipping back and forth, time wasted and etc. I would check the classifieds!

Thanked: 0Well, it looks like the razor thing is taken care of. I don't know if I should mention a name or not, but an incredibly awesome, generous member just offered me a DOVO "for my birthday." Now I can just ask for a strop and accesories from family gifts and be fully set-up, ready to shave. And now there will be another razor in the mix of razors to be passed from newbie to newbie. Pretty soon everyone getting into shaving will be albe to start with a "SRP community razor" until they can get their own! Now off to research strops and brushes...

See, I LOVE this forum. That's fantastic!
ONe piece of advice I can offer, make sure that you mention some names with your strops, names like Straight Razor Design, The Well Shaved Gentleman, Proforma, Illinois, Kanayama, etc. Some of the eBay names like Zeepk, Selective, etc. might not be the best choices for a strop, despite their attractive price, and family might not know the difference.
Happy Birthday!

Thanked: 0This forum is amazing. It's really great to see these things at SRP in a time when it seems like people aren't often as decent as they should be.
I fully planned on giving them a specific list of things, recommended by you guys, to choose from if they want to get me some nice shaving accessories. They would be lost in the huge world of stuff available and most people don't know anything about what they're looking at(not that I really even do yet). Thanks for the advice.
