With your budget you aren't exactly on a shoestring. The tight budgets are the problem. If I were you, and its primarily for display, I would find a MASSIVE blade, like 8/8s or bigger (8/8=1 inch, measured from spine to edge. Razors are typically measured in 1/8's even if it simplifies, unless it requires 1/16ths... so 4/8s is 4/8s, not 1/2. Same with 8/8s is not called 1 inch. Just a thing associated with it.)

IMO, the blades with the most heft to them are the best display pieces. Sure a 3/8's or 4/8's can be pretty and elegant, but take a look at this and tell me you're not impressed:

Yeah there's a whole other niche of people who are mostly interested in handles/scales. But the ones you'd find pretty are usually just molded plastics, which I find cheap and cheesy But that's just me - the scales molded like lobster usually sell on ebay for well over 500.
Not sure if you have enough time but one of the resto guys can make you really nice scales. You should take a look at the workshop->gallery section.

That is a really cool old razor. Any idea if it looks useable? Maybe something for me to use as a good learning project and have an awesome vintage razor that's actually useable. Since she's not going to get it and if the price doesn't go up, I might have to have a family member get it for my b-day. Though someone on this site just set me up with a nice DOVO as my first and most probably best b-day present! If that one's not looking useable, how often are old razors like this found in useable condition?

Very cool....I am not worried about time. If its not done by his birthday, I can just get a picture of one or something so he knows its coming. I will check them out too.

    Hi Kendrajay,

Being a hobby-oriented-male, I find things like watches, pens, and razors to be highly personal. I think maybe the best approach would be to get a high quality but *basic* razor, with a kit that includes everything he needs to start, like a strop, soap, etc. I'd recommend a Dovo "Best" with the simple black plastic scales (very classic), which is a great starter razor. The set will be well within your budget. Then, if he likes it, he can expand his collection with a razor with fancy scales. It's good to have at least 2 razors eventually...
