    Default Decent Strop

Hey everyone my name is Gabe. I'm a newbie. I just got a straight shave at my barber a couple of weeks ago and I decided to get a blade for myself. I caught the bug! Now I have read the wiki and scoured the forums and I couldn't find what i was looking for so I decided to ask. Can anyone name a decent strop that I could get? I already got one suggestion but I'm looking for more. I'm NOT looking for top of the line, I just want something that can do the job without damaging my blade which I bought from the classifieds from Trey .

    Thanks for your suggestions,
    Gabe

Fellow member KenRup sells these inexpensive strops for beginners. They're good but don't break the bank until you are sure str8 shaving is really for you.

welcome and I hope you enjoy straight shaving - whatever you do, don;t do what I did and buy an expensive strop as your first and only strop -

Stropping is not super difficult but definitely your first 20 times you use it, you will put some type of nick on the strop. A nice option would be to wait for Tony Miller to return from "Personal Leave" and order a strop from him with the practice strop. That way, you will have the practice strop to learn and have the other strop available once you are more comfortable with the strop technique which could be sooner than you think and to have one on hand will be advantageous and just darn convenient

Another option would be to check some of the sponsors here - you could probably get an acceptable first strop for 40 or so dollars - again, just upgrade at a later date.

    enjoy the ride!

Gugi, i tried to look for the 827 on ebay but i found the illinois 127 for about $30 and went ahead and bought it. I saw the price difference wasn't much so I figured this wasn't a bad purchase what to you think?

Thanks for the quick reply fellas,
    Gabe

gabe, it will work, although i prefer the 827, it has the opposite side of the leather.
canvas is important for long lasting edge, so use it first then the leather.
