Odd Stain
Hi there,
A question... My morning shave was a bit rushed today. I did 1 pass, then I oiled my blade and applied my alum block to my face. Then after a minute I saw a few spots I missed. So I did a water pass on a few spots. When I was finished there was a brownish stain along the length of my blade just above the bevel.
Is this from not rinsing the alum off my face enough, and most importantly did I damage my steel? Sorry I don't have pics, at least not until tomorrow.
Thank you...

Alum is a salt. Salt and water accelerate rust. Strop the razor and see how the edge performs.

Thanked: 190Its likely the oil build up. Just keep washing it and buffing it.

Hi there,
Thanks for the replies... I ended up removing the stain with some maas. Worked like a charm, and the razor is still sharp as ever....

So if it takes Maas that would mean it was rust? Because oil could have been removed with alcohol or white spirit.

It must have been. It did not come off with a cloth and just oil. It did not look like the typical thick redbrown rust. It looked like light brown soap scum.

Thanked: 190Good description and yes, early forms of the rusting process. I had the same thing going on with the tang of my first straight razor and had to clean it up. It just needed a hardy buffing, but I remember it was an early form of rusting. I have supply of MASS hanging around just in case if it happens again, but I am very diligent about cleaning and sharpening the razor after each shave and I have had no issues since.
