    Default Cheap strops for newbs?

Well I've succeeded in butchering my nice latigo. Are there any decent cheap strops to be had? I don't want to use a crappy strop, but on the flip side if I'm going to destroy it I'd prefer not paying $50-$100.

    Thanks

Google - Illinois #827 Strop and see who has the best deal going...

It should be between $30-$35 and at that price it cannot be beaten...
You get a quality Linen and Leather strop that lasts forever...

I break down strops in 3 categories

    Crap
    Good - under $50
    Premium - over $50

The #827 is in the good...

So then it doesn't really matter what kind of leather it is....so long as it's leather? Heck I've got a Tandy leather shop in the next town and can get all the supplies so long as I know which type of leathers to avoid.

I was thinking a trip to Tandy would be another fun project. However, I have the same issue of not knowing what types of leather work best for these.

I'm guessing it has a lot to do with preference and stropping technique, though.

    I can help.

I have purchased cowhide leather strips from a semi-local Tandy store. They conveniently have 2.5" wide strips that are approx 5 feet long. Around $20 if I recall correctly.

Ask for some chicago screws and some larger "D" rings, one for each end of the strop. You can drill holes for the D rings and you're off to the races. Since you'll be able to inspect the cowhide in person, look for a strip with a smooth uniform surface. You're off to the races.

Well I decided to go with a pumice stone and some 2000 grit sandpaper. Definitely not as silky smooth as it was before, but I think I might be ok in the meantime. Otherwise, I'll definitely consider a Filly or a little DIY.
