Thanked: 0Actually, he didn't. The Dovo did come out sharp enough to shave with, although I ruined the edge quite quickly by careless stropping and too much pressure.
I bought the hone and did the honing myself. It really isn't too hard. In fact, I find it easier than keeping my pocket knife well honed (I have a set of Arkansas stones for that), as the razor has a natural help to keep the right angle: the back of the blade.
Heh.
Eric is a fairly young man. His choice of how he practices his profession is oldtime though.

interesting, what hone(s) are you using? Also are you putting tape on the razors spine(back) to prevent hone wear from showing?
stropping is tough when starting out (and for some even when they are experienced :P) just remember slow even strokes it's not a race speed will come once you have the movements down.
Sorry whenever I hear barber I assume old since everyone today is called a "stylist" or something equivalent.

Thanked: 0This one:
Coticule Slijpsteen, 10cm bij 4cm.
A simple 4000/8000 stone. The fact that I picked the short one makes it a bit harder to get a good diagonal stroke, but the relative dimensions vs. my razor aren't any worse that those of my Arkansas stone to my Wenger pocket knife, so I am used to that.
I don't take any other precautions to protect the back. I am OK with some wear showing, as I bought this particular razor purely for use. If I ever pick up a beautiful vintage razor, that'll be a different story.
