Thanked: 0What have i bought?
Hey everyone,
Just started SR shaving and i purchased a DOVO razor which was supposedly "shave ready" and was pulling and tearing at my face like some kind of feral cat. I started shaving first off with a disposable blade SR and my new DOVO didn't even come close and quiet frankly wasn't near enjoyable compared to the disposable cheaper one. But i have another problem, because i am just starting out and living in Australia i find it really hard to find someone who can teach me and show me how to strop and test a razor to get it shave ready!
Sorry for the SA guys but if anyone could help it would be GREATLY appreciated!
Matt

Sounds like your razor probably wanst shave ready. The best thing to do is to send it out to a honemeister to have it honed.
Alot of sellers list razors as shave ready when in fact they arent!
In terms of tuition I would highly recommend Lynns DVD available from straight razor designs. This has in depth tutorials on shaving, honing and stropping etc...
There are also some great Youtube vids out there as well if you search for "razor stropping" or "straight razor shaving". Jockeys has done a great shaving lesson on there for a start!
I'm not sure if there are any honemeisters from Australia on here, so you might need to mail your razor to someone. Sorry I cant be more help here!
Let us know how you get on!

First, as has been asked, Where did you purchase the razor? Second, assuming the razor truly was shave ready, did you strop it before shaving? You may have dulled the edge with improper stropping. Third, have you read and followed the advice in the "First Straight Razor Shave" wiki?
First straight razor shave - Straight Razor Place Wiki
There are a lot of variables that could be in play here. It could be the blade, it could be your technique, it could be your bear prep and so on. If you tell us a little more information then the experts can step in and help.
The most important thing to do right now is just take a deep breath. Whatever is going on that's preventing a comfortable shave, can be fixed.

The last dovo I purchased was sold as "shave ready" (new from a store) however I experienced similar results to what you're describing. I would strongly suggest before you give up. Either buy a "shave ready" blade from here. Or contact a person here who can hone your razor up for you.

Thanked: 18welcome.
First off welcome. I think the best thing you can do is send the razor to get honed. Get yourself a decent starter strop (cheap is ok you will nick it). Learn to strop your razor to up keep it. Once you have mastered stropping your razor then maybe try to learn to touch it up. I would start with a fine hone just for touch ups. A barber hone off of here or any one of the bunch that there are on ebay would be a good choice. Make sure you ask the seller if it is lapped flat. Dont give up on conventional str8s. once you get it you will not regret it. Personally I think there is no comparison to the feel of a real str8 compared to a replaceable blade razor. Good luck.

You can't hone, you can't strop... this is off topic, rude, and gratuitous. Seriously. You sound like a jerk...
Straighty-
Between technique for shaving, stropping... there is a lot that can go wrong the first few times. I would recommend having a honemeister here get it sharp for you, then shave with it once unstropped- this will eliminate one variable for you. Then, with time your stropping will begin to get better, and your edges will last longer, and longer, and longer...
