Thread: Looking for the best razor

Hey guys,

I have used a straight blade to cut hair for some time now and was recently asked to get a heavier more professional blade. I need help!!

'Best' is rather subjective, and 'professional' usually means less frills, but 'heavier' sounds like a good starting point. How heavy is your current razor?
The current production razors rarely go outside the 6/8 size and 1/2 hollow grind, but there are plenty of vintage razors. The classifieds are a good place to find something that will fit.

Welcome to SRP. For cutting hair as in the 'razor cut' which became popular in the early '60s as far as I know I occasionally see a 5/8 Dovo Fritz Btacht that had teeth like a comb built in.

When my barber back in those days would razor cut my hair he used something like a 5/8 IIRC. Check out the razor club forum here and you'll see a plethora of different brands, styles and weights from the early days to the present.

A Wacker 1/4 hollow would do the trick.

I love that razor.

I think some states only allow disposable blades. Heavier blade, 1/4 hollow or a wedge. Get something that impresses your clients. I personally would have 2, a 1/4 hollow 6/8 for most people, and a big wedge for the big fellas.

there is no best straight razor out there.
It Depends on Personal choose.
Some loves heavy wedge blades.
Some hallow grounds so on so on.

I believe that the micarta handled Dovo razors with stainless-steel blades might be what you're looking for. They are fairly hefty and should hold up to professional use. The etching on their blades seems to suggest that they are intended for salon use:
