    Default rolled edge?

    Hi guys-
    I am brand new to straight razors. After doing what I thought was right, I tried to shave and felt as though there was more skin being removed than hair. After reading the other guy's post that had a similar result, I realized I probably have bad stropping technique. If I did roll the blade, do I have to go back to the hone, or just keep stropping? Thanks for your help.

    it depends . how much it has been damaged.
    if it is small enough then you can do back strokes on the hone. finial finish hones or in barber hones.
    just make 4-10 strokes then strop and see what happens.
    if blade already has small chips will better start with honing. i not sure what hones do you have. lets us know we can be more helpful.

    Thanks for your quick reply. I dont' see any visible damage to the blade, and it still seems pretty smooth, but I guess it's just not sharp enough to shave with. My hone is a Norton 4000/8000. Thanks again.

    Welcome to SRP. Here is the SRP Wiki where you'll find tutorials on stropping and honing. Unless you're confident in you honing ability you might want to send it out for professional honing. Here is member services where you will find folks who can take care of that for you. It will give you a sharp razor to shave with and something to compare to when you start honing. Best to leave your pro honed razor alone and practice on ebay or flea market finds if you can pick them up cheap.
    Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    Please understand this and do what i exactly say.
    take 8k side lap it . make it as flat as you can. then next do 5-10 back strokes(do you know what is back strokes means?)same as stropping. very light not pressure etc.
    after that go head strop the blade .now again don't put pressure on the blade. just strop 30-50 times try shave test see what happens.

    hey all-
    thanks for your help, but I just found out that I got swindled into one of those cheap Pakistani blades from VenusWorldWide. I really wish I would have found this site before my ill-fated purchase.;

    Don't feel bad bassman, I got bit by Venusworldwide also when I started. I liked the pretty blue blade. Then I found SRP! Welcome to the world of Straight razors. Watch out for the RAD!

    Bad luck there. Welcome anyway, and the classifieds are a good place to find a good deal. There are other places too, ruprazor has a good name as do Straight Razor Designs (see links on this site).
