Win!
Since I was home with the flu today I decided to clean up another ebay razor. Picked through my pile of test razors and came up with this tiny Kazoo that was part of a larger batch. Sadly I broke the original handle trying to depin it (today's lesson: identifying bakelite), but was able to cut down some broken horn scales from another razor in the lot.
Spent some hours sanding the blade from 150 grit up to 2000. Still didn't get it mirror polished but it'll do.
No work of art to be sure but I'm pretty happy about finding a use for those broken scales.
The best part: once the razor was together I sat down to hone it. I noticed as I honed the blade made less and less noise with each pass. Using this as a guide I went from 1k to 4k then 8k. The last few passes on the 8k where almost silent. Took it upstairs and stropped it for 60 laps on my homemade strop and then shave tested it.
It was so freaking sharp that when I started shaving at first I thought nothing was happening and the razor was completely dull!! It cruised through my neck hair with zero tugging. It was like running a hot knife through butter. This little guy shaves like a champ!! And the tiny little 2 inch blade means I'm not accidentally lopping off chunks of my moustache. Say hello to my new daily shaver! Best $8.00 and a few hours I've ever spent!

Truthfully I prefer the satin finish to the mirror, she looks great!

Thanked: 30I agree; satin finishes seem to work better to my eye, for certain scales.
Although, my favourite scales are tortoise and I prefer mirror to satin with those. I also like the idea of a smaller blade for those of us with a 'stache.
