    Default hair tonic

I wasn't sure where to put this question.. stuck it in newbie corner because that's me.

I figure you guys who've been at this thing for a while may also be expert in the realm of hair tonics. What I'm using today is American crew fiber and it's a good enough product but it dries a bit too stiff for me. American crew makes another kind of product called grooming cream which is perfect except that it's really tough to get out of my hair the next day so I put that on the shelf for now.

Appreciate any tips if you know of a good hair tonic, gel, or pomade that has reasonable hold, not too oily and won't dry stiff (I'd rather have it a bit oily than stiff if I have to choose between those). Of course it'll be just perfect if it has a barbershop smell to it.

    Thanks in advance!

I use the Redken Men Maneuver Working Wax. It has good hold, easily washes out, doesn't make the hair crunchy, and has a matte finish so you don't look like an italian mobster.

I have the same tub I have been using since I bought it a year ago.

For barbershop smell, only product I know of is Clubman hair styling gel. It's water soluble so it washes out easily. Lucky Tiger hair tonics (such as "Three Purpose Hair Tonic") has a nice smell that could be considered barbershop.

Most of the true old school products are petroleum based and are in varying degrees of greasy.

I have used the Clubman gel. It works great and also washes out very easily.

Just use it sparingly and and it will be fine. If you use too much it will clump up, dry out, and then ball. Really very gross.

I found this out the hard way...

clubman is great because it conditions well and it great for training your hair. It tends to start of pretty stiff but it wears in and softens nicely. i would suggest Murrays bees wax as well. it has a great hold and doesn't look greasy nor does it feel very greasy either. And you can still run your fingers through your hair.

    Good Luck!

    Default couple follow up questions

Thanks guys for the tips. I've used redken products before and I think they are good quality in general so I'll try the maneuver stuff for sure.

There seem to be a few different clubman products out there. Is this the one recommended?

Amazon.com: Pinaud Clubman Styling Hair Gel, Original - 16 Oz: Health & Personal Care

Also, Murray's beeswax is described the maker as being "ideal for dreadlocks... " are you using it on regular hair and it's ok for that too?
